It has not been possible to confirm any further details about J. Thompson, but it is possible that he is the Private John Thompson (241960) (q.v.) who is commemorated on the Earby War Memorial.

The British Army Pension Record exists for another candidate: Private John Thompson, 12136, who lived at 25, Rook Street, Barnoldswick and who attested on the 31 August 1914 and discharged on the 30 October 1914. The record states that he was born at Barnoldswick, c. 1878 and had married Minnie Baldwin in 1898. In 1911 John and Minnie were living at 19, York Street, Barnoldswick. In the 1901 and 1911 census John is shown as being born at Accrington, Lancashire. His date of death is not known.
