James Wormwell (born 16 May 1893 at 125, Every Street, Nelson) was the son of Henry and Sarah Ann Wormwell, née Windle. Henry was born at Kelbrook, Yorkshire and Sarah at Laneshaw Bridge, Lancashire. James was the nephew of Company Sergeant-Major Samuel Wormwell (729) (q.v.).

James Wormwell was wounded on the 24th or 25th April 1917 near the Hindenburg Line to which the Germans had retired after the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He died from his wounds on the 27th April.

WORMWELL – April 27th, 1917, at the South Midland Field Ambulance Station, France, from wounds received in action, Pte. James Wormwell, East Lancashire Regiment, nephew of Mr. W. Wormwell, Struntlybank, Kelbrook, aged 24 years.

KELBROOK SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS

The relatives of Pte. James Wormwell, East Lancashire Regiment, have been informed of his death from wounds at the South Midland Field Ambulance Station, France. A letter from the Nursing Sister in charge states that:– “Private Wormwell was admitted into hospital on April 25th suffering from gunshot wounds in the back and abdomen. Everything possible was done for him, but he passed away this morning (April 27th) at one a.m. There were no messages left. He will be laid to rest in Peronne Military Cemetery, and there will be a cross with his name and number to mark his grave. This is all the information I have.

“Yours sincerely, A. LOYD, Sister-in-Charge.”

Pte. Wormwell, who was 24 years of age, joined up in August 1914, and fought in the Dardanelles and Egypt before going to France about two months ago. He was a nephew of Mr. Wm. Wormwell, Struntlybank, Kelbrook, with whom he lived prior to joining the Army, and was employed as a weaver at Messrs. J.J. Duckworth and Co.’s Dotcliffe Mill, Kelbrook.

We reproduce a photograph of Pte. James Wormwell, East Lancashire Regiment, whose death from wounds at the South Midland Field Ambulance Station, France, on April 27th 1917, was recorded in our columns last week. Pte. Wormwell, aged 24 years, was a nephew of Wm. Wormwell, 9, Struntly Bank, Kelbrook, with whom he lived prior to joining the Army in August 1914. He was formerly employed as a weaver by Messrs. J.J. Duckworth and Co., Dotcliffe Mills, Kelbrook.
