BARNOLDSWICK – HIS FIRST TIME IN THE LINE

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wiseman, 39, Gisburn Road, Barnoldswick, have sustained a severe blow in the death of their only son, Pte. John Rushton Wiseman, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, news of which came to hand on Monday evening. He was 19 years of age and had only been in France about six weeks when he was killed, this being his first day’s experience of actual warfare. Previous to joining up he was engaged on farm service at Coates Flatt, Barnoldswick.

Lieut.-Col. R. P. Atkinson, in a letter of condolence to the bereaved parents, writes:– “Your son had not been with us long, but he had won the warmest regard of all officers and men. This was his first time in the line, and his conduct and behaviour throughout was that of a true soldier. Please accept the deepest sympathy of all officers and men in ‘D’ Company in your sad loss.”

22 November 1918

WISEMAN – In Loving memory of our dear son and brother, Private John Rushton Wiseman, West Riding Regiment, who was killed in action in France November 22nd, 1917.

He left his home in perfect health,
He looked so strong and brave;
We little thought how soon he’d be
Laid in a heroes grave.
He gives us still the dear old smile
From the photo on the wall;
We feel as if our hearts would break
When fond memories we recall.

From his loving Father, Mother and Sister, 39 Gisburne Road, Barnoldswick.
