John Simpson was the son of William and Jane Ann Simpson, née Willan and brother of Private Charles Simpson (49973) (q.v.). Their father was born at Barnoldswick, Yorkshire and mother at Kirk Merrington, Co. Durham. William and Jane's son, Fred, served for over a year with the East Lancashire Regiment in France and/or Belgium. He was discharged on the 24 August 1916 for being underage.

1901 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: 10, Bank Street - John Simpson, aged 18 years, born Barnoldswick, son of William and Jane A. Simpson.

John was married to Mary Parker Hunter in 1907 and was the brother-in-law of Private Abraham Hunter (306432) (q.v.).

1911 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: 7, Craven Street - John Simpson, aged 28 years, born Barnoldswick, husband of Mary Simpson.

British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards: Pte John Simpson, 18/1328, West Yorkshire Regiment. Theatre of War first served in: (3) Egypt. Date of entry therein: 22 December 1915.

John was probably transferred from the 18th Bn Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) (2nd Bradford) to the 10th Bn when the 18th Bn was disbanded on the 15 February 1918.

BARNOLDSWICK CASUALTIES – KILLED, WOUNDED AND MISSING

Pte. John Simpson, West Yorkshire Regiment (Bradford ‘Pals’), whose home is at 7, Craven Street, Barnoldswick, was wounded in France on July 1st, and is now at the base hospital. His wife has received a letter from him stating that his injury is not serious.

Lance-Corporal John Simpson, Barnoldswick

Lance-Corporal John Simpson, officially reported killed in action on August 24th, was a Lewis gunner In the West Yorkshire Regiment. He was the eldest of six sons of the late Mr. William Simpson, and of Mrs. Simpson, 22 Valley Road, Barnoldswick, all of whom joined Forces. Three are still serving; one has been discharged from the Navy, and another has been “missing” in France over 12 months. Lance-Corporal Simpson was 36 years of age, and married, his wife and one child living at 7 Craven Street, Barnoldswick. He enlisted in May, 1915, and served in Egypt before going to France, where he has spent 2½ years. Before joining the Army he was a winding overlooker employed by the Craven Manufacturing Co., Butts Mill. He was wounded during the big push on the Somme in July last year.
