Private Joseph Tom Scott, Barnoldswick

Private Joseph Tom Scott, Royal Berkshire Regiment, news of whose death came to hand at the weekend, was the only son of Mrs. Scott, 168 Burnlea Terrace, Barnoldswick. A letter received from his officer states he was killed during the advance on October 3rd.

“He has been my servant for the past month or so,” the writer goes on “and I was only four yards away from him when he was killed. We had both just had dinner together, and were moving off when a shell exploded very close. When I looked round I saw he was dead. It is impossible for me to praise him enough for his work out here, both as servant and also as section-commander, which position he would take when short of N.C.O.s. We buried him where he fell, and I have ordered a cross to be erected.”

Private Scott, who was only 19 years of age, went out in France in February last. He was formerly a leading member of the Barnoldswick Orchestra, and also a very promising violinist, having for four years been a member of that same orchestra. He was employed at the Maypole Dairy in Albert Road.
