CONONLEY – DEATH OF STEWARD PERCIVAL GEORGE SCOTT

Much regret was expressed in the village when it became known that Steward Percival George Scott, of the Royal Navy Sick Berth Reserve, had died at Shotley, Harwich, on Monday, after an operation for appendicitis. Deceased came to reside in the village in April 1914, having previously resided at Bolton Abbey, where he was employed by the Midland Railway Co. as a platelayer. He was a member of the Colne Branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, and the day following the declaration of war he received a telegram to report to the R.N.S.B.R. Hospital at Chatham. He proceeded there at once, and two months later he was transferred to Shotley Hospital, Harwich where he remained until his death. Deceased had only been ailing about a fortnight, and his wife having been notified of his serious condition journeyed to Harwich, and remained until he died. Although deceased had only resided in the village about five mouths before the outbreak of war, he had made many friends. He leaves a widow and mother to mourn his loss, and much sympathy is extended to them in their sad bereavement. The funeral takes place at Embsay Parish Church on Saturday afternoon, when it is hoped his friends in the neighbourhood will pay a last token of respect to his memory.

SCOTT – In loving memory of Steward Percival George Scott, who died at Shotley Hospital, March 31st, 1919.

In our house you are fondly remembered,
Sweet memories cling round your dear name.
We who loved you in life very dearly
Do love you in death just the same.
No pen can write, no tongue can tell
Our sad and bitter loss,
But God alone has given us strength
To bear our heavy cross.
