Ralph Hodgson was the son of Thomas and Margaret Hodgson, née Mooney. Thomas was born at Stillington, Yorkshire and Margaret at Byer Moor near Marley Hill, Co. Durham.

Ralph was married to Jane Ann Kelly (born Usworth Colliery, Co. Durham) in 1910. Jane Ann's father, Dennis Kelly, a widower, was married to Ralph's widowed grandmother, Jane Mooney, née Kelly.

The 1921 Census shows that Jane, her two sons and three other family members were living at 19, Chapel Road, Steeton. The 1939 Register shows that Jane and Ralph were still living at the same address. Jane died in 1983.
