STARBOTTON SOLDIER DIES FROM WOUNDS – DRIVER RICHARD DENT TENNANT

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Tennant, Bushey Lodge, Starbotton, in the death of their youngest son, Driver Richard Dent Tennant, Royal Field Artillery, who was wounded in action on the Western Front on June 8th, and died shortly afterwards, aged 23 years. The only details so far to hand are conveyed in a letter to the parents from Corpl. J. Barnes, belonging to the same company, who states that on the 8th inst. an enemy shell of a fairly large type burst, severely wounding Driver D. Tennant. He adds:– “He was extremely well looked after by everyone, and I assure you that everything that could possibly be done for his comfort was done. But shortly after his admission to the dressing station he quietly passed away. He made no last request beyond saying that he wished his mother was here. He was buried in the military cemetery by our own artillery chaplain just below the lines at 3 o’clock this afternoon (the 10th), and by comrades belonging to the party of which I was in charge when the sad incident occurred. His comrades all join with me and wish to express our most sincere sympathy in your sad bereavement.”

Captain Alexander, commanding the section which the deceased soldier belonged, in a letter to the parents, says:– “I know nothing can compensate you for your loss, but I should like to express my deepest sympathy with you in your great trouble.”

On Sunday last a memorial service was held in the Parish Church, which was filled with a congregation from all parts of Upper Wharfedale, who thus showed their sympathy to the bereaved family. The Dead March was played by the organist, and the National Anthem sung. The Vicar officiated. A muffled peal was rung, and the flag was flying half-mast.

HUBBERHOLME – IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN

In token of great respect and esteem, and of affectionate remembrance, a memorial service was held in Hubberholme Church on Sunday evening for Gunner Richard Dent Tennant, fallen in action, who was closely connected with the township of Buckden. The church was crowded with friends from near and far. The Vicar of the parish preached a memorial sermon from St. John XV. 13, ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends’. The musical part of the service was augmented by the great kindness of some members of Settle church choir.
