TODMORDEN LOSSES

PTE ROBERT JACKMAN

A case much similar to the above is that of Pte. Robert Jackman, of the West Riding Regiment, whose mother resides at Croft Gate, Lumbutts. Pte. Jackman was reported missing on April 18, 1915. He formerly resided in the Walsden district, and was on the local postal delivery staff. He was married, and, we believe, had two children.

His mother has now received the following communication from the Record Office at York: “It is our painful duty to inform you that no further news having been received relative to Pte. Robt. Jackman, who has been missing since April 18th, 1915, the Army Council have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he is dead and that his death took place on April 18, 1915. We express the sympathy of the Army Council with you in your loss.”

LOCAL WAR EFFECTS

MISSING TODMORDEN SOLDIERS

NOW PRESUMED KILLID

In regard to Pte. Robt. Jackman, of the West Riding Regiment, in addition to what we stated last week, we may now state that he leaves a widow and two young children, who reside at Croft Gate, Lumbutts. He was 38 years of age and was for four years on the postal delivery staff at Todmorden, although not serving in that capacity when called up. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Mons, but killed his guard and made good his escape. He was subsequently invalided home, and returned to active service on Christmas Eve, 1914. Mrs. Jackman has never seen him since, and despite the message from the War Council presuming his death she still optimistically hopes he will yet turn up. She comes of a fighting stock. Her father served in India, her grandfather was killed in the battle of Inkerman, her great-grandfather was wounded during fighting in Spain, and her great-great-grandfather fought in the battle of Waterloo.

LINTON – A MILITARY MEDALIST

Mr. and Mrs. Jackman, of Ivy Cottage, Linton, have received a letter from their youngest son, Private J.M. Jackman, stating he has been awarded the Military Medal. He joined the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment and went out to France the last week in December, 1916.

His brother, Robert, went out at the beginning of the war, and was in the retreat at Mons. He was reported missing on the 19th April, 1915, and now reported killed on or about that date.
