27 April 1917

ASKRIGG SOLDIER FALLS IN ACTION

Mrs. Mudd, Askrigg, has received the sad news that her husband, Sergeant-Major Robert Mudd, West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action on the 12th inst. Mrs. Mudd has received letters from his two brothers, who are in the same Battalion, stating that his regiment was making a charge, the deceased soldier and two officers being close together when a shell dropped and killed all the three.

Company Sergeant-Major Mudd was a smart typical British soldier and had the true soldier spirit. He joined the Army in 1899 and went through the South African War, in which he was wounded. He held the South African Medal 1901-2, with five bars, viz., Laings Neck, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, and Tugelia Heights. When war was declared, deceased was in the 2nd Reserve, and his time would have expired in November 1914. He was one of the first to be called to the Colours and acted for some months after rejoining as drill instructor. He was sent to France on July 12th 1915, and was on active service until December 1915 when he claimed and obtained his discharge. He resumed civil life, being employed by Messrs. G. Dougill and Sons, contractors, Aysgarth. He was again called up on June 28th 1916, and again sent to France on July 11th 1916, and had been with his Battalion from that date until his death. He was very highly respected by all who knew him and much sympathy is extended to his widow and her three children.
