Tom Clarkson was the son of Henry and Isabella Clarkson, née Billington. Henry was born at Preston, Lancashire and Isabella at Laisterdyke, Bradford, Yorkshire. Isabella died in 1883 and Henry married Mary Grundy in 1887.

1891 Preston, Lancashire Census: 7, Miles Street - Thomas Clarkson, aged 8 years, born Sutton, Cambridgeshire, son of Henry and [stepson] of Mary Clarkson. [The birthplace given for Thomas is incorrect].

1901 Preston, Lancashire Census: 8, Elmsley Street - Thomas Clarkson, aged 18 years, born Preston, Lancashire. [Thomas and his sister, Isabella was boarding with Joseph and Mary Ellen Wilkinson.]

Tom was married to Grace Fishwick in 1915. Grace may have been related to Rowland Fishwick (267020) (q.v.). At the time of their marriage Tom was stationed at Belton Park, Grantham, Lincolnshire with the 8th (Service) Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). Grace married Albert Brown in 1917.

Children: Thomas William, born 27.7.15. Remarks: Widow was remarried on 31.3.17 to Albert Brown (cotton weaver). The remarriage gratuity was £50 4s. 3d. which was paid to Mrs Grace Brown on 15.5.17. The pension for the child is being paid to Mrs G. Brown.

Tom was killed in action near Contalmaison during the Battles of the Somme, 1916, 1 July-18 November, at the Battle of Albert, 1916, 1-13 July.

BARNOLDSWICK MEN KILLED

Mrs. J. Bentham, 52, Esp-lane, Barnoldswick, has been officially notified of the death of her son, Corpl. John Bentham, 2nd East Lancashires, which took place in France on July 30th. He was 22 years of age. As a reservist he had been out since the beginning of the war, and had been previously wounded. Before the mobilisation order he had worked as a weaver at Bankfield Shed and for Messrs. T. Dent and Sons, contractors.

Pte. Thos. Clarkson, 11th Duke of Wellington’s Regt., has been killed in action in France. He was 32 years of age, and a native of Preston, but worked for some time in Barnoldswick as a weaver before enlisting soon after the outbreak of war. He had been previously wounded in the Dardanelles. His only brother was killed in France a year ago. Pte Clarkson leaves a widow and one child, residing at 14, Turner-street, Barnoldswick.

Pte. Thos. Clarkson, 11th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, was killed in France on July 5th. He was a married man, 32 years of age, and leaves a wife and one child living at 14, Turner Street, Barnoldswick. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and had seen service in the Dardanelles, where he was wounded in the Sulva Bay landing. After recuperating he was sent to France in the spring and had been at the front about three months when he met his death. A native of Preston, he had lived for some time in Barnoldswick and worked as a weaver at Messrs. Bradley Bros., Bankfield Shed.

He was a married man, 32 years of age, and leaves a wife and one child living at 14, Turner Street, Barnoldswick. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and had seen service in the Dardanelles, where he was wounded in the Suvla Bay landing. After recuperating he was sent to France in the spring, and had been at the Front about three months when he met his death. A native of Preston, he had lived for some time in Barnoldswick and worked as a weaver at Messrs. Bradley Bros., Bankfield Shed.
