Private William Barber, Skipton

Official news was received last week-end that Private William Barber, West Riding Regiment, son of Mrs. Barber, 42 Westgate, Skipton, had died on October 31st, following amputation of his left arm at No 5 General Hospital, Rouen, France, necessitated by shell wounds received during the recent advance of our troops. He had also been seriously wounded in the right leg. We tender our sympathy to the widowed mother, to whom the distressing news came as a great shock.

BARBER - October 31st, 1918, died from wounds in the hospital at Rouen, Private W. Barber, West Riding Regiment, son of Mrs. Barber, 42 Westgate, Skipton, aged 25 years.

We little thought when we said good-bye
We had parted for ever and you were to die;
Oh, the grief that it gives us words cannot tell!
For we could not be with you to bid you fare-well.

From his sorrowing Mother and Friends.

07 November 1919

BARBER - In loving memory of my dear son, Pte. W. Barber, 1/7th West Riding Regt., who died of wounds Oct. 31st, 1918, at Rouen.

Far away in a hero's grave
Lies one we loved but could not save;
But his memory is just as dear to-day,
Though one long year has passed away.

From his loving Mother and Friend, 42 Westgate.
