William Dewhurst was the son of Thomas and Ann Dewhurst, née Bielby and brother of Private Thomas Dewhurst (270379) (q.v.). Their father was born at Walton-le-Dale, Lancashire and mother at Flamborough, Yorkshire. William and Thomas's sister, Clara, the wife of Private Robert Hebden (29/618) (q.v.), died in the sinking of RMS 'Lusitania' on 7 May 1915.
