FARNHILL - PRIVATE W. BARKER KILLED

The parents of Private Willie Barker (East Yorks.), residing at the Arbour Cottage, Farnhill, have received word that he was killed in action on the 24th of September. Private Barker only went out to France on September 11th. Writing to his mother, the Rev. Denis Tyndall, C.E. sends his prayers and deepest sympathies. He says:- "Your son had only been with us a short time. His friends tell us he was killed instantly by a bullet, and that he can have suffered nothing whatever. His body was laid to rest in the Military Cemetery at Bailleul, and a white wooden cross has been erected with his name and number on. I know your grief must be very great since his death was so very soon after he had come to France, but it may be a consolation to you to know that he died doing his duty to save us all, and that he was true to his God right to the end of his life. May God Himself comfort and help you as only He can, and give you courage and help to look beyond the troubles of this world to the Face of the Master. Yours in deepest sympathy."

Private W. Baker was twenty-one years of age last December, and before enlisting was apprenticed as a wheelwright with Mr. S. Green, Crosshills. He was also connected with the Farnhill Primitive Methodist Church, and a member of the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute, of which his parents were until recently curators.
