HISTORY OF THE EAST LANCASHIRE REGIMENT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (Littlebury Bros. Ltd. 1936)

8th (Service) Bn. East Lancashire Regiment

1917
A fresh attack on Greenland Hill was ordered for the 28th April. The Battalion was ordered to move forward in the rear of the 10th Loyal North Lancashire ‘to conform to the movements of this battalion, and to support it energetically.’ The Battalion was ordered further to occupy and consolidate the enemy front line trenches on the front to be attacked.

The attack progressed well; ‘D’ Company was left to occupy ‘Cuba Trench’ slightly short of the objective, whilst Lt. Speak pushed on with ‘C’ and rushed the next trench which was held. Lt. Speak was wounded and fell into a shell hole a few yards in rear of the objective; his men dug back to him and he remained in command until night. ‘A’ and ‘B’ Companies had also reached their objectives, but were unable to get in touch with our troops on their left; they suffered some casualties from fire to the right flank. Two convenient communication trenches were utilised for protecting the flanks and the position was maintained until the battalion was relieved on the night of April 28th/29th.

[Ernest Seel was killed in action near Gavrelle on the 28th April 1917.]
